If the Seventh Generation Matters, Then Our 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth Matter Too

If your child came out tomorrow, where would you go for support in Akwesasne?
There’s a tribal meeting tomorrow, and I want to raise something that can no longer be ignored.
Our 2SLGBTQ+ community needs support. I identify as Two-Spirit, Queer and Lesbian (she/they). Pronouns matter. Like many people, I’ve explored different identities on my journey of self-discovery.
That experience is why I want to help create safe, supportive spaces for our youth.
I keep hearing about more youth coming out in Akwesasne and I receive emails asking where people can find support, resources, and safe spaces.
Right now, many don’t know where to turn.
We need access to accurate information about 2SLGBTQ+ identities, language, gender-affirming healthcare, and gender-affirming clothing. Families need resources too.
We need visibility. We need to be included in community conversations, programs, and cultural spaces. Many of us still don’t see ourselves represented. Especially, in Longhouse.
This is bigger than identity. It’s about community wellness.
When people feel isolated and unsupported, it affects mental health. It can contribute to depression, addiction, drugs, alcohol abuse, and suicide.
We hear a lot about the Seventh Generation. If that teaching truly matters, then we need to support all of our youth.
Inclusion has to come from the top, leadership. Tribal Council, Clan Mothers, program directors, and community leaders all have a role to play.
It’s time to stop talking about inclusion and start building it.
Our youth are already here. The question is whether we’re willing to support them.
